If the core gets damaged or starts leaking, there's no need to replace the whole valve — unscrewing the old core and fitting a new one is enough, which speeds up the repair and keeps the cost down.
What this core is for
In a split-body valve, the core is the part that holds pressure and lets the tyre switch between air inflation and water filling, used for wheel ballasting. Because the core screws in rather than being permanently fused to the valve body, wear or damage to it doesn't mean pulling the whole valve out of the rim — in most cases, swapping the core alone solves the problem.
