The patch consists of black rubber over a blue tie gum, which bonds it to the repaired tube surface once cured. Thin, even edges keep the patch lying flat against the tube, lowering the risk of the edges lifting over time and making it harder for dirt to collect around the repair.
The slit mylar backing is peeled off right before the patch is applied to the prepared, cement-coated tube surface — until that point, it protects the patch base from dust and accidental contamination.
